At Södra Gård farm you can enjoy a unique holiday in an Old Hunter’s Cabin that is over 50 years old. The house is located on the edge of a forest and offers a panoramic view of our vegetable garden and emerging food forest. This allows you to experience the Swedish peacefulness and space that people associate with Sweden. In the early morning you can enjoy bird sounds and even spot birds of prey up close. Every year we have a nest or two of various birds of prey in our forest. In addition to our own nature, you can also fully enjoy the Glaskogen nature park. The border of the park is just 10 minutes away, where you can immediately start your first walks. Would you rather return to civilization; the center of Årjäng is around the corner (5 min) or Arvika (45 min). In short, the house is centrally located for every occasion!
Hunting in Sweden
Hunting in Sweden is a very popular sport among young and old and knows almost no boundaries. Small and large game can be hunted after King Gustav the Third decided to normalize this for ordinary people from February 21, 1789. Thanks to this right, hunting became so incredibly popular that hunting was almost extinct within 40 years. In 1830 a Hunting and Game Association was set up to apply more regulation during hunting. The aim of this association is that animals in the wild are not threatened with extinction but are shot in a regulated manner. A good example of this is are our own hunting rights. We are part of a hunting group where we have the rule to hunt 1 elk in October. We are not hunters ourselves, but the possibility is there because the hunting rights belong to our property.
The previous owner of the plot was also an avid hunter and spent a lot of time in the holiday home. He regularly hunted medium to large game, such as deer and elk. To stay in the hunting style, we decorated the hunter’s house with small hunting elements, such as skulls and a stuffed bird. The house is also equipped with only the basic facilities needed after the hunt. As a result, there is no running water in the house, but there is a lovely wood stove.
Renovating the Old Hunter’s Cabin
In the year 2024 we started renovating the old hunter’s cabin. The house has seen better days and has been slightly neglected by the previous owner. The chimney was in such poor condition that it was replaced by a local contractor. We mainly focused on the renovation of the inside of the hunter’s house so that it feels cosy and warm. The house must give every guest a relaxed atmosphere with even the opportunity to be offline for a while (off-grid).
The old hunter’s cottage is equipped with some modern equipment such as a refrigerator, oven and electric stoves. We have also installed a spacious, old pine bed measuring 180x200cm. The house is furnished with second-hand materials/furniture, to preserve the old atmosphere and because this suits our self-sufficient life. The kitchen and outdoor shower are equipped with biodegradable soaps. Both do not have a connected drain to a septic tank. Please do not use your own soap during your stay with us. The main house is visible from the kitchen window.
